Hong Kong Tramways was founded in 1904.

Currently, there are 163 tramcars (including 2 antique trams) running in Hong Kong which carry an average of 200,000 passengers every day.


In Hong Kong, Trams (locally called Ding Ding) operate only on the Hong Kong Island side.

The Hong Kong Tram or Ding Ding is a cheap and easy option to get around Hong Kong Island side.

Hong Kong double-decker trams are one of the oldest forms of transport in the city and are an essential part of HK life.


Hong Kong Trams are called "Ding Ding", because of the constant noisy ding ding noise they make along their route.  

Don’t get confused  "The tram" or the ding ding tram is not the same as the  "Victoria Peak Tram" in Hong Kong.

The Tram 13 KM route goes from Kennedy Town on the West to Shau Kei Wan in the East with over 100 stops

Hong Kong "Ding Ding" Tram Routes :

There are 6  Tram routes in Hong Kong which mostly overlap, but visitors find these routes most helpful:

- Kennedy Town Shau Kei Wan- the main line goes all the way across Hong Kong Island

- Shek Tong Tsui to North Point- shorter route of the main line starting Skek Tong Tsui to North point

- Kennedy Town to Happy Valley- overlaps the main line from Kennedy town to Causeway Bay and then loops around Happy Valley Stadium- horse racing area

- Happy Valley to Shau Kei Wan- overlaps from Causeway bay all the way to Shau Kei Wan

Some Useful Ding Ding tram stops on the main line in Hong Kong are :

- Central, Admiralty, Wan Chai, and Causeway Bay

- Sheung Wan stop: for Dried Seafood Shops, Western Market

- Central: Stop for Star Ferry, Peak Tram, Statue Square, and SOHO area

- Admiralty: Stop for Pacific Place

- Wanchai: Shopping and Nightlife

- Happy Valley Loop: the horse races

- Causeway Bay: SOGO and more shopping, Victoria Park, Times Square

- North Point: King's Road, Tin Hau Temple

How to Ride and Fares - Tramways "Ding Ding" in Hong Kong

Riding Hong Kong Tram "Ding Ding":

During rush hour, the HK trams tend to get full fast but they are very frequent.

Sit on the top deck of Ding Ding in Hong Kong! 

Topdeck of Tram in Hong Kong is fun and offers a nice view of the street but don’t go up if you are exiting at the next stop.  

Passengers should board from the back and exit from the front of the Ding Ding in Hong Kong.  


How to Pay Fares on Hong Kong Tram "Ding Ding":

You pay when you exit from the front of the tram next to the driver. 

You can pay your fare in exact change or tap your Octopus card on Hong Kong Ding Ding Tram.

On Hong Kong Tram, Children below the age of 12 are charged one half of the adult single fare. 

Children below the age of 3, if accompanied by an adult and not occupying a seat, will be carried free of charge.

No more than two children will be carried free of charge for anyone adult on Hong Kong Tram or ding ding.

You can also purchase a 2 Day pass which include tour but make sure that you will ride the Tram enough times to make it worth the cost.

Tips for riding a "Ding Ding" Tram in Hong Kong

- While on the trams do not obstruct the staircases or doorways, or stand on the staircases.

- Do not place any parts of the body out of the windows of Tram in Hong Kong.

- Eating, drinking, or smoking inside the Hong Kong tram is not allowed

- Luggage over 7 kg or larger than a backpack is not allowed on trams in Hong Kong.
