Tenryu-ji Temple & Bamboo Grove

Tenryuji temple (天龍寺) is located in Kyoto's Arashiyama district. It is one of the most important temples of the Kyoto's five great Zen temples. Tenryuji temple complex is also registered as a world heritage site.

Tenryu-ji is the head temple of its own school within the Rinzai Zen sect of Japanese Buddhism.

The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of the most photographed sights in Kyoto. It is located little north to Tenryu-ji temple entrance in Kyoto's Arashiyama district.

At Temple - Admission to grounds: Free, Hodo: 500 Yen/ adult, October 21st-March 20th -8:30am-5:00pm, last entry 5:00pm, March 21st-October 20th - 8:30am-5:30pm, last entry 5:30pm;

 

Getting There

 

From JR Kyoto Station:
Take JR Sagano line to Saga Arashiyama Station
Exit station and follow signs.
Takes about 15 minutes (by walk) from Saga Arashiyama Station

Or

If taking Keifuku dentetsu (Arashiyama line) get off at Arashiyama Station
2 minutes walk from Arashiyama Station

Recommendation

 

•This is an active temple and many people come to pray so please be respectful when visiting.
• Wear good shoes and bring water
• Best to pair visit to Tenryu-ji temple with Bamboo Grove
