Macau - A-Ma Temple - Helpful Information for Travelers


A-Ma Temple is located on the southwest tip of the Macau Peninsula.

It is the oldest and most famous temple in Macau.

Built in 1488, the temple is dedicated to the goddess A-Ma, the sacred sea goddess who blesses the fishermen.

It is believed that Macau got its name from the A-Ma temple (called locally “A-Ma-Gau”).

A Ma Temple Macau is also the designated site of the Historic Centre of Macau, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Macau.

A-Ma Temple has six main areas-

- Gate Pavilion

- the Memorial Arch

- the Prayer Hall

- the Hall of Benevolence (the oldest part of the temple)

- the Hall of Guanyin

- Zhengjiao Chanlin - Buddhist Pavilion

A-Ma temple is a busy place from morning till afternoon daily and is an active temple site; therefore, be respectful during the visit.

Getting There

How to get to A-Ma Temple in Macau:

Check with your hotel concierge on the easiest way to reach the A-Ma Temple.

Public Bus to A Ma Temple Macau:

- Take bus No. 1, 1A, 2, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 10A, 11, 18, 21, 21A, 26, 28B, or 34, and then get off at A-Ma Temple Stop.

- Walk to A-Ma temple from this stop

Hop-on Hop-off Bus to A-Ma Temple:

Macau Hop-on Hop-off sightseeing Bus also has a stop at A Ma Temple.

Hop-on Hop-off bus is flexible and easy, runs every 45 minutes, and starts at Macau Outer Ferry Terminal.

Alternatively, take a cab and show the driver the A-Ma temple written in Chinese to reach the A-Ma temple.

 

Recommendation

A-Ma Temple Macau Travel Tips:

-A-Ma temple is open from 07am – 06pm. Visit early in the morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds

- If you have time, visit the Macau Maritime Museum located on the side of the A-Ma temple front grounds.
  You will see the building and museum name from the front of the A-Ma temple main gate.

- There is a lot of smoke from incense, especially when there are many visitors.  
  If you have respiratory issues, you may want to come early to avoid the crowds and smoke.
