The official currency in Macau is the Macau Pataca (MOP), however, the currency of choice in Macau is Hong Kong Dollars (HKD).

All Vendors in Macau including taxi, restaurants, shops, and hotels accepts Hong Kong Dollars (HKD) in Macau.

 

Money Exchange (Cash)

 

You can buy Hong Kong Dollars (HKD) and Macau Pataca (MOP) everywhere in Macau.

To simplify, stick to Hong Kong Dollars when changing currency as everyone accepts Hong Kong Dollars (HKD) in Macau.

Macau has currency exchange counters in all shopping malls and tourist areas.

In Macau, you can also change the currency in any Casino.

"CASA DE CAMBIO" sign means the Money Exchange counter in Macau/Macao.

Major Currency Exchange Counters on Macau Peninsula side are located at:

1). Senado Square area - Open from 9:00 AM - 6 PM,

2). Ferry Terminal and Airport - Open from 8:00 AM - 9:30 PM,

3). Hotel Lisboa and the surrounding area - Open from 9:00 AM - 11:00 PM,

4). Small shopping street behind Holiday Inn Macau Hotel - Open from 9:00 AM - 10:00 PM.

Private Money exchange companies in Macau:

1). "Casa De Cambio Soi Cheong LDA" Money changer has 9 branches in Macau including Senado Square, Rio Hotel, and Outer Harbor Ferry Terminal.

2). Parkway Exchange "P&W Casa de Cambio" has counters at 5 locations including Senado square.

3). Asia Exchange "Casa de Cambio Asia" has counters at 4 locations including Senado Square and across Lisboa hotel.

4). First International Resources has 4 locations at Macau International Airport.

5). Casa de Cambio Lisboa runs counter in each Lisboa hotel - Hotel Lisboa and Grand Lisboa.


It is known in Macau that the place that offers the best exchange rate from USD to MOP & HKD is Hotel Lisboa.

Note that this is the hotel right beside the Grand Lisboa.

The currency exchange counter in Lisboa is open until 11 pm daily.

Money Exchange on Taipa side in Macau:

Please note that you will not find any private currency exchange counters on the Taipa side of Macau.

However, all Casinos and hotels on the Macau Taipa side will change major currency.

You can also exchange currency at banks in Macau, however, will have to pay fees/commission.

Bring your passport or ID if you are going to the bank in Macau to change currency.
