Mumbai - Tips

Weather

Mumbai weather is usually hot and humid

Clothes

Wear light cotton clothing which protects your body from sun, insects and dirt.
It’s a good idea to dress conservatively (not exposing too much skin) to avoid unwanted attention.

Shoes

Bring a good pair of walking shoes/sandals. Sidewalks in many places are uneven, so be careful.

Hygiene

Carry hand sanitizers, wet wipes, paper tissue, and bug repellent spray with you at all times.

Beverages

Drink water or soda from sealed bottles to avoid getting sick.
Any boiled beverage such as Chai or coffee should be okay to drink.

Food

Avoid street food in general especially with kids.
In general don’t let food sit out for more than 15-20 minutes as food can spoil quickly in Mumbai weather. Indian food is typically spicy.
Don’t expect beef in India even at McDonalds. Beef is banned in Mumbai and the State of Maharashtra.

Bargaining

In the street markets bargaining is a common practice.

Transportation

Public transport is very crowded in Mumbai. Taxi cabs and private cars are more comfortable modes of transportation in Mumbai. Traffic jams are common in peak hours or during special events.

Public Toilets

When you see a good and clean toilet, don’t wait use it. Although there are western toilets in many places around Mumbai, you might run into squatty toilets or toilets that don’t work.
Often there is no toilet paper in the public restrooms or washrooms, carry your own or be ready to use the water faucet or bucket.

Beggers

Many beggers target tourist aggressively, so avoid them and walk away quickly. Don't try to engage them in conversation. Often children are used to elicit sympathy from tourists.
