New York City - The New York Public Library (NYPL) - Travel Guide



The New York Public Library (NYPL) is the second-largest public library in the United States (behind the Library of Congress), and one of the largest in the world.

The main branch, the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, is located in the two-block section of Fifth Avenue between 40th and 42nd Streets

The building was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1965 and renovated multiple times since. 

Patience and Fortitude, the pair of marble lions that stand before the main building at Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street in Manhattan, welcome locals and visitors from all over the world since the Library was dedicated on May 23, 1911.

Open Hours:
SUN 1 PM–5 PM
MON - SAT 10 AM–5:35 PM

Free one-hour tours of the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building begin at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Monday through Saturdays and at 2 p.m. on Sundays.
Tours meet at the reception desk in Astor Hall.
Tours are available on a first-come basis and are limited to 25 people.   

Free, self-guided audio tour.  
Available in English and Spanish and runs 30–45 minutes.

Getting There By Subway to NYPL Building in NYC :

- Take train 7  and exit at 5th Ave stop (closest to the library) or,

- Take train B, D, F, Q to Times Square (42nd) Stop and walk east on 5th Ave
