The Iolani Palace is a beautiful historical royal palace building in Honolulu on the Island of Oahu in Hawaii.

The Iolani Palace used to be the royal residence of the Kalākaua Dynasty from 1845-1893.

The Iolani Palace is located in the downtown Honolulu area.

Iolani Palace offers 3 tour and tickets options:

1). Guided Tour with a Palace Docent -

Price - Adult - US$27 and Child - US$6

A volunteer docent leads the Guided Tour

Visitors learn about the Iolani Palace’s history from its completion in 1882 to the overthrow of the Hawaiian Monarchy in 1893.

Guests hear stories about the furnishings and Royal residents as they go through the 1st-floor staterooms and 2nd-floor private quarters.  

The tour ends with a self-guided tour of the basement Galleries.

2). Self-Led Audio Tour -

Price - Adult - US$20 and Child - US$6

Audio tours allow Visitors to explore the Palace on their own while listening to a pre-recorded audio guide to the 1st and 2nd floors.  

The audio recording is 45 minutes in length and is available in :
 - English, French, German, Hawaiian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, and Spanish.

The tour concludes with a self-guided tour of the basement Galleries.

Both Guided and Self-led tours will take about 60-90 minutes.

 

3). Basement Gallery Exhibit Tour -

A shorter tour alternative is the  Basement Gallery Exhibit tour (30 minutes)

This is a self-guided tour of select treasures from :
- the Royal Collection,
- the restored Kitchen and the Chamberlain’s Office and
- Learn about the Palace restoration through a special exhibit accompanied by historic photographs.

In addition, a free introductory video “A King's Noble Vision” is shown every half-hour in the Iolani Barracks. 

You can purchase tickets at the Ticket Office, located in the Iolani Barracks, Monday-Saturday from 8:30 am - 4 pm.

Getting to Iolani Palace in Honolulu

 

By Car to Iolani Palace : (from Waikiki)

- Head west on Ala Moana Blvd for about 2.5 miles

- Right turn on Alakea Street

- Turn right at the 3rd cross street onto S King St

The vehicle entrance to the Iolani Palace Grounds is located off Likelike Mall, on the left of King Street between the Palace and the Hawaii State Library.

There is limited metered parking on Iolani Palace grounds and nearby streets.
Note that Parking meters take quarters (coins) and major credit cards.

Be aware that street parking near Iolani Palace may be limited, especially during the weekday during work hours.

Please read posted signs, especially TOW AWAY information.

There is also a private parking garage at Alii Place (1099 Alakea Street).

 

By TheBus to Iolani Palace : (from Waikiki)

- Take route 2, 13, 42, or E towards downtown from Waikiki

- Exit at Judiciary Building (Kamehameha Statue- closest stop), Honolulu Hale (City Hall), State Capitol, or Washington Place

- Walk to the Iolani Palace from your stop

 

By Waikiki Trolley to Iolani Palace : (Hop-on Hop-off Bus)

- Take the Waikiki Trolley, Red Line - historic line

- Exit at Iolani Palace – across the street from the Judiciary Building and the Kamehameha Statue

Recommendations and Tips for visiting Iolani Palace in Honolulu

 

- Combine your Iolani palace visit with Honolulu Chinatown and Honolulu Academy of Arts to make a full day

- If you come during Christmas time, the whole area is decorated for the holidays, and there are winter displays in City Hall.
